Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has permitted battery-run
rickshaws to continue operation across Dhaka city considering the overall
economic situation, and the impact of skyrocketing essential commodity prices
on low-income segments of the population.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader made the
announcement on Monday noon at a discussion held to mark the first founding
anniversary of Bangladesh Awami Ulama League.
He however added that the battery-run rickshaws will remain
banned on 22 highways, in accordance with an earlier decision.
On Wednesday, Quader had asked the authorities concerned to
take steps to halt the movement of battery-run three wheelers on the roads
throughout Dhaka city.
